Art-O-Matic 2000
High atop the roof of the old Sears — and later Hechingers — building in Tenleytown sits "Oo, La La!" breasts bobbing and swaying, while a cool breeze fans a spectator's brow. Two curvaceous strips of rusting steel extend from a torso-like triangle of similar material. At the tip of each strip, Arlington metal sculptor Peter Wood has welded even rustier steel drum lids. The drum lids trace indolent patterns in the wind across the former roof-top parking lot.

"Oo, La La!" is but one of many intriguing installations in the roof-top sculpture garden of Art-O-Matic's second annual art rave. Nearly 700 visual artists show sculpture, paintings, prints and photographs —from the bizarre to the banal (any one able to cough up the $35 hang fee can exhibit) to the, well, buoyant and bouncy— on three floors of the warehouse-like building across Wisconsin Avenue from the Tenley Metro stop. There's music and dancing every night, too, with a total of 78 bands during the month. Watch out! This place could become another Torpedo Factory, right here in NW. That's torpedo with a capital T. Oo, la la!
